Stop Doing Split Squat Jumps with Your 9-Year-Old
Before your kid starts jumping, they need to learn how to control their landing.
Power without control is how injuries happen.
Here are 3 foundational exercises every young athlete should master first:
1️⃣ Split Squat Hold — build strength and control in the bottom position.
2️⃣ Split Squat — full range, clean reps with no knee cave.
3️⃣ Rear Foot Elevated Drop Split Squat — learn to absorb force with ~80% of weight on the front leg.
Once they can own these positions, then they’re ready to add plyometrics like split squat jumps.
Progress the right way — strength and control first then speed second.
