How To Separate Your 12 Year Old From The Pack
Speed is one of the most sought-after qualities in hockey — every parent and player wants it.
“Being fast” isn’t about running ladders or skating endless sprints. It’s about building a foundation that allows an athlete to produce and transfer force quickly and efficiently.
Here’s how I’d approach developing real, game-changing speed for a 12-year-old hockey player.
1️⃣ Build the braking system.
Isometrics teach athletes how to absorb force and control their deceleration — the key to separating from opponents and creating space on the ice. A strong braking system makes every stop, cut, and change of direction sharper.
2️⃣ Strengthen the core — all 360 degrees.
A strong core connects the upper and lower body so athletes can coordinate movement and transfer power efficiently. Better core strength = smoother edges, cleaner transitions, and better balance under pressure.
3️⃣ Improve reactiveness and the body’s spring. Quick, elastic contact with the ground teaches the athlete to move explosively with minimal delay. That’s where true game-speed comes from — not just strength, but how fast you can use it.
