Turn Bad Passes Into Offense (Regain & Attack)
Turn Bad Passes Into Offense (Regain & Attack)
This is a high-tempo, multi-touch #drill that forces players to handle pucks under pressure, adjust to imperfect passes, and attack with deception.
Setup & Flow:
Player starts backward with a backward crossover start
Coach feeds a puck to the forehand (for a righty on this side, would go backhand if lefty)
Player must immediately pull it to the backhand (or forehand for a lefty on this side) → quick return pass
Player pivots up ice, receives a second pass (intentionally slightly behind)
Must catch + pull across body to regain control
Attacks with a quick inside-out dangle (sell left, go right)
Repeats move around a second stick to change release point
Snipe 🎯
Why this works:
Trains puck control under disruption (bad passes = game reality)
Builds backhand confidence (huge separator at higher levels)
Reinforces regain + attack mentality instead of slowing down
Develops deception in motion (not stationary stickhandling)
Combines skating, hands, and decision-making into one sequence
Coaching Points:
No dusting pucks — handle and move
Sell the fake with your eyes + shoulders, not just hands
Stay compact on pulls (don’t drift the puck)
Attack with speed after regaining — don’t glide into the move
Finish like you mean it — pick a corner
Who it’s for:
Forwards and D — this shows up everywhere (breakouts, regroups, blue line walks, entries).
