Small Hockey IQ Behind Last Night’s Stanley Cup Final Winner
After watching last night’s Stanley Cup Final Game 1 winner, one detail stood out.
Most players would open toward the net.
Instead, Colton Sissons opens away from pressure, protecting the puck and creating a better passing option.
We worked on a similar concept with our morning crew today.
After retrieving the puck off the wall, the player opens away from the net instead of toward it. That protects the puck, creates a better passing lane, and gives the puck carrier more time to make the next play.
The crisscross creates separation, but the timing and body positioning are what make the sequence work.
This is a simple concept that can be applied at every level and is a great drill for players and coaches looking to improve puck support, timing, and playmaking through the middle of the ice.
