More Stretching Isn't Going To Help Your Hips
More Stretching Isn't Going To Help Your Hips
If your stride feels tight or locked up, the issue usually isn’t a lack of flexibility.
It’s a lack of hip strength and control through rotation.
Skating speed depends on how well your hips can rotate, load, and re-load each stride.
If you can’t control those positions, no amount of passive stretching will carry over to the ice.
That’s why we use the Seated 90-90 Heel Tap.
This drill teaches your hips to rotate smoothly while staying strong and active, which is exactly what you need for real on-ice explosiveness.
Key points when you do it:
• Stay tall through the torso
• Rotate heel-to-heel with control
• Keep the toe pulled to your shin
• Progress by lifting the hand and letting the hip do the work
Perform 7–10 controlled reps per side and you’ll start to feel your stride open up and feel more powerful.
If you want a deeper breakdown, I have a 20-minute follow-along YouTube video that walks you through hip mobility step by step and shows how to actually make it transfer to skating.
